Nageshwar Temple, Gujarat (Jyotirlinga)
Nageshwar (God of Serpents) Temple is one of the famous Jyotirlingas in Dwarka, Gujarat, dedicated to Lord Shiva. In the Puranas, there is a story about Nageshwar Jyotirlinga -
There was a demon named Daruk, who lived in Dwarkavana with his wife Daruki. Daruka terrorized the people by misusing the blessings of Goddess Parvati. He imprisoned Supriya, a Vaishya who had faith in Lord Shiva and others. The demon asked Supriya to teach him the path of devotion to Shiva. Supriya refuses to fear that Daruka will get additional powers and they will be misused. An enraged Daruka started torturing Supriya. Supriya had a strong faith in Lord Shiva and Shiva appeared in the form of Jyotirlinga in the prison itself and promised to protect everyone.
According to the Vamana Purana, the 'Balkhilas', a group of dwarf sages, worshiped Shiva in the Darukavana (forest of Dwarka) for a long time. To test his devotion and patience, Shiva came to Darukavana in the form of a Digambara (naked) ascetic wearing only a naga (serpent) on his body. The wives of the sages were attracted to that ascetic and left their husbands and followed him. Rishi got upset and disappointed. Losing his patience, he cursed the ascetic for losing his linga. At that very moment, Shiva's linga fell on the ground, and the Lord immediately disappeared. The linga entered the lower world from the middle of the earth and increased in height until it ascended above the heavens, the earth trembled, and all movable and immovable things trembled.
Brahma and Vishnu then decided to find the beginning and end of the great linga, but unable to do so, he prayed to Shiva to save the earth and take back his linga. Shiva, thus pleased, appeared and said: If the gods and men worship it, then I will start again. Brahma, Vishnu, and all other deities agreed and since then the linga is worshiped by all. Shiva had promised his divine presence forever in the form of Jyotirlinga in Darukavana hence it was known as Nagnath or Nageshwar - Lord of Serpents Mahadev.
The Shiva lingam is towards the south while that of the Gomugan is towards the east. The latter part of the Nageshwar temple is built using red Dwarka stone and not the black stone that is common in all other Shiva temples. A silver replica of Nagdev (snake) is also kept. Behind the Jyotirlinga is the idol of Goddess Parvati.
